The Process
PHASE 1 Initial Visit
Lin will learn from the client:
- What they wish to achieve from a new landscape and how the area will be used.
- Problem areas.
- Preferences in plant material.
- Design style.
- Budget considerations.
- Lighting requirements for safety and beauty.
- Installation time frame.

PHASE 2 Proposal
Once a retainer toward the design is received (the fee varies according to job size and requirements), measurements are taken to generate a hand-drawn plan that is ready for client approval and the HOA, if necessary. The detailed ¼” = 1’ scale plan denotes the location of such items as hardscape, plant material with common and Latin names, boulders, fountains, benches, and pots. Photos will be taken while noting sun exposure, and existing irrigation and lighting.
After the plan is completed, an installation estimate is generated, including line items for all materials, labor, and sub-contractors, if needed. Lin selects specific “before” photos and sketches “after” drawings to further illustrate her design.
Upon client approval, payment for the remaining design balance is due, and the design and installation estimate is now the property of the client to utilize as they wish. But, of course, the best choice for installation is the crew of Vintage Landscape, managed by Lin Phillippi.
